Side Notes: We need to bring the hummingbird feeder in every night because we live in bear country in middle Tennessee so the hums are usually waiting at the back door for us. Also, we drink our moka pot coffee (poor man's espresso) Americano style with about 1/3 coffee and hot water.

Gardening Tips for the Sensible Prepper

I have been gardening for a long time. In fact, you could say I have a compulsion to grow food. I’ve also been a prepper for a long time, but I’ve wasted a lot of time and money, preparing for things that never happened. I now consider myself to be a “sensible prepper”, and here are my three gardening tips, if you are also a sensible prepper.

6 Years of Savings from Mini-Split Heat Pump in Cold Climate

    Great product, however, using the OSB strips is a really horrible idea. Far more difficult to nail and screw into than fine. I agree with you with the crap from the home centers. It’s warped and it’s not a full three-quarter inch thick. I’m gonna lay some quality information on you from my 40 years of experience, don’t buy anything from the box doors 90% of it is crap go to a real lumberyard and get real one by three furring strips and you will find their far superior to anything at the centers. They’re straighter are to the correct size and you can probably get them in a furring strip grade or a one by three, which is even better

    Two plumbers told me that, in their opinion, the only advantage of a tankless heater was the space saving. The cost, at least here in Ontario, Canada, for a tankless unit is a LOT more than a tank unit. It's at least twice the cost to purchase a quality unit and even a rental is about 25% more expensive. Both plumbers told me that a tankless unit needs more maintenance. I have a rental tank unit and love it. Rent is less than $30 monthly and I get any service calls for free. I had the old unit (it was about 10 years old) replaced a while back and a new, larger unit cost me nothing. I'll stay with the tank unit.

    So you never turn it off and switch to LP on your own due to loss of efficiency at certain temps (say, 20 degrees or below)? You always wait till it turns itself off? In other words, is it still more efficient than LP until it shuts off on its own?

In this small place is my friend, a husky, poodle mix and myself. We need AC - lolI don’t use the dehumidifier option - I’m not sure if it will leak in my house, since I did not install the small draining hose that came with it. May look into it late but I don’t worry about much humidity in the apartment. I don’t understand why the negative reviews since all things mentioned, I personally did not find issues with. Definitely worth it!

    This was an exact replacement for the old one that lasted about 10 years. ruclips.net/user/postUgkx7yWIKcrbA9KMHkGSfcgxW2lsjHT6B8Sh The top of my mitigation tube by my roofline was just a 90 elbow which allowed too much debris to fall down into the fan, eventually ruining it. Without this issue, I bet it would have kept running another 10 years. When I replaced this fan, I added an extra elbow joint so the top tube now it does a 180, which should solve that problem. The radon guys around here wanted to charge me a $300 diagnostic fee, then parts/labor (probably close to $600 total). I installed this all by myself in about an hour for the cost of the fan; it would probably be even easier/faster with two people. FYI the manufacturer's warranty greatly differs depending on whether you install it yourself (1 yr warranty) or have a licensed installer do it (10 yrs).

    Europe here. As somebody mentioned before, mini-splits are the default form of AC/heat pumps sold (unlike the USA there are no cooling-only units sold). They're a really popular choice here for older buildings without central heating, weekend houses, and even a lot of houses use them for heating nowadays. Worth noting most people use single-zone systems; multi-splits are rare. Most ACs (we call any air-to-air heat pump an "AC") do the cooling pretty well, but it's the heating that really sets apart a good AC from a Chinese unit. Nothing against the Chinese units (hell there is one Chinese AC that proved itself repeatedly to be a great option for heating) but the Japanese still are the boss. A list of what I'd personally recommend: 1. Mitsubishi Electric. By far the top dog when it comes to heating. Anything that supports a "VGHZ" HyperCore outdoor unit is worth a buy. Twin rotary compressor, pan and compressor heating and an insanely well adjusted PCB that allows for 100% operation down to -15°C and stable operation down to -25°C. 2. Panasonic. The AC of choice here is the KIT-VZ12-SKE Hypercharge. Goes down to -30°C of efficient heating and is also the only unit to blow continuously warm air even when defrosting. Only downside is somewhat worse efficiency than the Mitsu HyperCore. 3. Fujitsu. Any Fujitsu. KM, LL and LU have proven themselves to be really great units, though nowhere as fancy as a Mitsu or Panasonic Hypercharge. 4. Gree Amber Premium. Best the Chinese can offer. It's got somewhat worse modulation on cooling than any of the other units on the list but when it heats it's an absolute monster.

    The bad stuff shown here does contain a very thin sheet of foil (or maybe two, I have no idea), but there's a plastic liner inside (or between the two sheets). Obviously that thin sheet of foil isn't going to hold up if the plastic lining catches on fire. Unfortunately, the semi-rigid duct is a pain to work with (and in some cases, you might need two of them), but it's worth it for the elimination of the fire hazard. Just don't use it anywhere the duct goes through the wall or floor, anywhere hidden in the walls or floors, or anywhere downstream of a built-in duct.

    Matt, we recently bought an 80 to 100 old house and had it moved to our land in the counrty. I tried to locate the unit about the same distance from all faucets. There is about a 20 or so delay before the water is hot. I'm considering installing a small instant on electric heater under each faucet to eliminate the delay & water waist. Have you done anything like this?

    • @MattKnowsThat
      @MattKnowsThat 11 месяцев назад

      That's an option, but an expensive one. You might consider a simple recirculation system. You can have them with a button activation or even based on a motion detector. They pull the cold water out of the hot line and push it back to the water heater. One with a temperature sensor will stop the pump when the water in the hot line gets to the set temp or sometimes they just run for 10 seconds and stop. I'd avoid having one on a timer that just recirculates for an hour in the morning and an hour in the evening, they waste a lot of energy. Also make sure that the hot water supply lines going to those faucets are all insulated.

    Its more efficient but we need 2x as much gas as before! I seriously doubt anyone saves money on this system. You are using so much gas when i turn on the faucet for 30 seconds. Which is probably how long itll take for the hot water to get to my room. Seriously you could just get a bigger water tank. If you were crazy and put it on a timer so its got no power while you sleep. Guess what the water would still be hot when you woke up. And you would save even more. Look it takes like 30 minutes to boil water? Well you are doing it in 5 seconds. It takes how much concentrated heat for that? 170 amps at any needed moment… 2x gas pressure? Hmm nah. Infact if you had a water heater that was 500 gallons you would be able to shower once a day for a week without any power. Hot water. And imagine if everyone had that? Oh well the gas pressure is low everyone showers around 9pm. Imagine if they were all electric? Poof blue smoke of dead transformers.

    Nice story and good to hear how well it has worked out for you. I have 3 mini splits in my full electrical house plus the wood stove so my saving is a little different. Before the mini, I just used electrical floor board heaters. Those ran a pretty buck over the season. Now, I have a 115V -9K BTU mini split turned on 24/7 at 70 degrees in my son's room and the electrical draw is so little, I dont see the difference on my monthly bill. However, I also have an 18K BTU in the main floor and plus a 12k BTU in the master beddroom, both tied to a 230v- 30K BTU condenser outside. This is a different story. I have had to learn how to use it in the most effective way possible because keeping it on 24/7 Is defintely not an option with the electrical draw. I warm the house with the wood stove then run the mini to maintain the temp. At other times, I run the mini to warm up the house then let the wood stove keep the heating thereafter. It has worked out so far but still learning how to use it and watching my electrical usage til I get this down packed. Still experimenting and learning. Thanks for sharing your story.
